“”TRUE FLAG” is my first lithograph, printed in Paris in May 2015. Each color is hand-painted on mylar and burned to aluminum then printed on gorgeous, hand-ripped paper. There were no computers used to make this print – it’s truly an analogue artwork. For the print itself, i wanted to experiment with the litho process, which i was not very familiar with. Under the guidance of Print Them All and Idem, i was able to work through several ideas before arriving on this image. it’s ultimately directly related to my screen prints, but with all of the magic that lithograph has to offer and inspired by this incredible Print Studio i had the honor to be able to work in. « TRUE FLAG » is a tapestry of intersecting and overlaid colors, as if all flags were woven into one. The name “TRUE FLAG” is the opposite of “FALSE FLAG” – a covert military operation designed to deceive in such a way that the military action appears to be carried out by entities other than those who actually planned and executed them.” Maya Hayuk

Maya Hayuk

Maya Hayuk’s paintings are dazzling glows of light and color in an ongoing pursuit of the psychedelic experience in visual form, injecting political activism and humor throughout. Her extensive love of indigenous imagery and music inspire the vigor and spontaneous dance of her work. Hayuk weaves visual information from her immediate surroundings into elaborate, painterly abstractions, thus creating an engaging mix of referents from popular culture and advanced painting practices alike. Her large-scale murals speak to the artist’s obsession with symmetry, perfect imperfection and outer and inner space. Ultimately, the traditional and the contemporary blend into new harmonic, dissonant, optimistic compositions. She sees her studio painting practice and mural making as both inversely relational and symbiotic. Hayuk earned a BFA in Interrelated Media (SIM) at Massachusetts College of Art and has studied at V.C.U., Richmond, VA, Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto, Canada, the University of Odessa, Odessa, Ukraine and at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, Maine. She has taught and given talks at Illinois State University, Ox Bow School of Painting and Sculpture, VCU and PAFA.

Maya Hayuk’s work has been the subject of one person exhibitions and commissions at venues including The Bowery Wall, NY, The Hammer Museum, LA, The Museum Of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada, Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, The Netherlands; Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens, New York; Musee E.A.V., Rio De Janiero, Brazil; Matucana Artspace, Santiago, Chile; Democratic National Convention, Denver, Colorado ; and Monster Island, Brooklyn, New York. Hayuk lives in Brooklyn, NY.
