“This artwork is the logical continuation of 50 years of collisions, accidents, and encounters in my work, between history, art history, poetry, my passion for music, and this perpetual game of words which inhabits me.

In this artwork, you can see the three primary colors, which I have never deviated from, for 40 years. This choice of colors came from my passion for stained-glass windows, coats of arms, flags, and the rainbow. You can notice the beauty and the depth of the black, the intensity of the red synonym of passion, this intense solar yellow, almost burning us and this window of blue. The whole thing speaking of a “monde riant” (laughing world) since I am a great optimist and that I always speak about hope.

Under many circumstances in my life, I have appropriated the codes, the works, the colors, the signs and the symbols, which I then transformed. This is what happens through this lithograph. It is a step in my life because I always have been passionate about the details and I realized with this lithograph that I am going towards abstraction.” Jean-Charles De Castelbajac

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, alias JC/DC, is born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1949. He is primarily known for his talent as a fashion designer, dressing everyone from John Lennon and Lady Gaga to Pope John Paul II. For more than 40 years, he has been blending in a remarkable way, art with fashion, breaking down the codes of the conservative Parisian catwalks. The designer has never seen frontiers between fashion, art and design.

So, when Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, recently exchange his couture’s tools for brushes, it was not a surprise. “King of the Unconventional”, his offbeat and colorful vision of art, taking inspiration from the pop culture has been brightening up the streets of cities all over the world.

He made his entrance into the art world with his first solo exhibition “The Triumph of the Sign” at the Paradise Row Art Gallery. Since then, his artistic activities never stop, from drawings on the streets to large-scale art installations, such as the giant fresco in the Paris-Orly’s facade of the airport, the neon frame of the King Sejong’s Statue, in Seoul or recently his colorful illustrative artwork at the Convent Garden, in London.Today, his chromatic prism has spread widely at the international and settled all around the globe.
