Ron English

A prolific New York-based painter, designer and street artist, world famous for unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, movies, books, television, and album covers, Ron English coined the term POPaganda for his signature, a mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, humorously turning advertising into “subvertizing” and parody into illumination. A guest star in such movies as “Supersize Me” and “Exit Through the Gift Shop” and an episode of the Simpsons, “Exit through the Quik-E-Mart,” playing himself as a member of an all-star street art gang, Ron has also collaborated with many commercial brands Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Puma, Absolut, Burton, Hurley, Scion and designed album covers for Slash, Chris Brown, the Dandy Warhols and others. With a BFA from the University of North Texas and a MFA from the University of Texas at Austin, Ron’s work since the 80’s falls into three genres: fine art, street art and toy designing. Galleries in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome, Singapore, Seoul, and Hong Kong now represent his work, mostly oils on canvas, recognizable for Ron’s stunning technique, inventive use of color and his unique copyrighted characters: camo deer, temper tots and combrats, sexy cows and three-eyed rabbits, Marilyn Monroe with Mickey Mouse breasts, MC Supersized and Abraham Obama.

Catalysing street art away from traditional wild-style lettering and into clever statement and masterful trompe l’oeil based art, Ron’s illegal murals and billboards blend dazzling visuals with biting political, consumerist and surrealist statements and have hijacked public space worldwide for art’s sake. Billboards in the early 80’s soon progressed to masterful, enduring murals on the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Palestine Wall in 2007 and the US-Mexico border in 2010. Invited to London for the 2012 Olympics then to Stavanger, Norway for the Nuart Festival, and as the featured grandstand artist for Denmark’s Roskilde 2013 Music Festival, Ron English was the first artist in 2015 to work on the Houston Bowery wall. Since “Ronnnie Rabbbit” in 2004, Ron’s unique and highly coveted collectibles, each with significant variants, continue to fetch healthy aftermarket prices in the booming art toy culture.
